Test Detail
Gait / gait keeper (DMRT3) — gaited breeds
General genetics · Horse
A variant associated with the ability to perform lateral gaits (tölt, paso, running walk) and with the coordination of the gait pattern. It is not a disease, but a locomotion and performance trait: the A allele (gait keeper) allows four-beat gaits, while A/A homozygotes show a more pronounced gait and a worse high-speed trot. The test guides selection according to the discipline.
Incidence
American Trotter, Bhotia Pony, Chakouyi, French Trotter, Icelandic Horse, Kentucky Mountain Saddle, Missouri Fox Trotting, Morgan, Paso Fino, Peruvian Paso, Quarter Horse, Rocky Mountain Horse, Scandinavian Coldblood Trotter, Spiti Pony, Tennessee Walking Horse, Thoroughbred and Zaniskari Pony. Frequencies: limited data.
Clinical signs
- Lateral or alternating gait pattern (tölt, paso, running walk)\n- Ease for four-beat gaits\n- Difficulty with high-speed trot in A/A homozygotes\n- It does not in itself involve pathological clinical signs
History
The dossier includes OMIA:001715 and the DMRT3 variant NC_009166.3:g.22391254C>A (c.902C>A; p.Ser301Ter; rs1150690013). No author or year is recorded.
Breeder management
- It is a performance trait, not a disease: it does not require removing breeding animals\n- Use the genotype to guide mating according to the discipline\n- Avoid selecting A/A if the goal is high-speed trot\n- Inform the buyer or registry of the DMRT3 genotype
Specialist notes
It is not a clinical diagnosis; differentiate from lameness and neuromuscular alterations that modify the gait. Complementary: kinematic assessment of the gait and locomotor examination.
