Furnishing / wire hair (RSPO2)

A coat variant associated with 'furnishings' (moustache and eyebrows) and facial wire hair in the dog, caused by a 167 bp insertion in the 3'UTR region of the RSPO2 gene. It is not a disease, but a morphological trait with variable expression. The test reports the genotype for the variant.
Incidence
Described in the Dachshund (Cadieu et al. 2009) and in the Portuguese Water Dog (Parker et al. 2010). There are no reliable population frequencies by breed; mentions of other specific breeds require an additional source.
Breeder management
- Use the test as a coat selection tool, not as a disease screening\n- Interpret the phenotype together with other coat loci (FGF5, KRT71)\n- Do not use medical language of 'affected/carrier' for this trait\n- Communicate that it is a morphological trait with variable expression
Specialist notes
Do not confuse with dermatological pathology. The absence of furnishings ('improper coat') is associated with the variant in some breeds such as the Portuguese Water Dog. The final coat expression is polygenic.
