Genetic Tests
The shipment of biological specimens must comply with the protocols established by the courier or transport service used. In some cases, air transport requires compliance with the regulations of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for hazardous materials.
Tests based on the detection of specific genetic traits range from karyotype analysis to the identification of specific genes.
You should contact the laboratory offering the test to determine the details of sample collection and handling; the required samples range from hair and swabs from various sources to skin or whole blood.
Tissue samples for genetic analysis must be unfixed and sent immediately after collection. As with most molecular techniques, aseptic collection and the prevention of cross-contamination between samples are essential to obtain reliable test results.
Collection
For genetic analysis in both dogs and cats, the sample may be either 0.5-1 ml of whole blood in EDTA or two dry oral mucosal swabs.
Shipping
Send the correctly identified samples:

- Stick one of the stickers we will have sent you on the bag containing the sample.
- Place the sample in the bag with the animal’s name.
- The bag will contain the sample from a single animal.
- Please note that all the data received will be reflected in the result, so it is very important that it is written in clear, legible handwriting (preferably in capital letters).

Results
Once the analysis has been performed, you will receive the result via email.

Avoid contamination
To avoid contamination with DNA from another source, the animal should not be fed or suckled for 1-2 hours before sample collection. During this time, it should be separated from the other animals.
Rub firmly
When collecting the sample, rub firmly with the swab on the oral mucosa (between the gum and the sides of the mouth) to ensure that enough cells adhere to the swab. It is not possible to perform a genetic test if enough genetic material is not collected. For safety reasons, the use of two dry swabs per animal is recommended.
Let air dry
It is very important to let the swabs air dry: after collecting the sample, put the swab back inside the tube and do not close the cap until 1-2 hours have passed, after which it should be closed (making sure it is completely closed).
Label the sample
Please label the tube with the important information (animal’s name, owner, microchip number…).
Send on the same day of collection
Send the two swabs to Dr. Barba together with the “Genetics” analysis form, if possible on the same day as sample collection.
